‘50 years of KGV Prices’
By Simon Dunkerley © 2004

As published in Stamp News May 2004 Edition

Further to last months reflection on the prices of the famous Kangaroo issues, as Stamp News continues to celebrate its fiftieth year of publication, it is also worth reflecting on the price increases experienced by the KGV issues during that time.

2d tete-beche pair: from £300 in 1955 to $250000 in 2004

Table 1 shows the Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue (ACSC) prices for a wide selection of KGV items. In order to maintain as much consistency as possible, this list is largely restricted to items that were priced in every edition from at least 1955 onwards. The only exceptions being (1) the 1d large multiple watermark monogram strip of three, the 1d die III imperforate at base and three of the watermark inverted varieties being listed and priced for the first time shortly after 1955; (2) 1d red ‘CNE’ variety was not priced mint in 1955; (3) the famous 2d tete-beche pair that for some unknown reason was not priced in 1975 and 1980. In each of these cases, the prices inserted are based on comparative prices and/or known realisations current at that time.

The items are chosen to reflect a broad range of varieties, including imperforates and watermark inverted, monograms, imprints and rarer shades, perfs or types. Whilst the majority are priced mint, a significant number of the varieties are only recorded in used condition. These are designated by * and O respectively in the third column. In some cases, the average price of more than one similar item is listed. An example of this is the 1d Engraved imperforate at right, where the prices for the variety in Plate 1 and Plates 2 to 4 are averaged for each entry. These are designated with ‘Ave.’ in the third column.

This table shows the prices for every five years through to 1980, shortly after which the annual publication of the catalogue ceased. After a gap of a few years, the entire catalogue was last published as one volume in 1988. Since then, the KGV section of the catalogue has been published as a single volume on only two occasions, in 1994 and 2001. To provide the fullest possible spread of years, the 1988, 1994 and 2001 prices are all shown. In addition, an approximation of either the latest known realisation or an estimate of what each item would reasonably be expected to realize at auction in the 2004 market based on current trends is shown.

Naturally, the prices from 1955 through to 1965 are in £, and show virtually no change during a period in which the economy was generally not booming. As noted last month, there was a significant credit squeeze in the very early 1960’s. This did not last for long. As the table shows, with some variation, the overall prices averaged more than a three-fold increase in each five year span from 1965 through to 1980. By comparison, as we saw last month, the Kangaroos doubled or very nearly doubled during these same periods. With the KGV items generally coming off a smaller base, this is not at all surprising, particularly as they also have continued to rise in popularity.

from £60 for a block in 1955 to $20000 in 2004

Whilst many of these items are of a specialised nature, the general perception remains that such items increased by more in the late 1970’s through to the early 1980’s than in other periods. However, that is not the case, as the significant increases from the mid 1960’s to the mid 1970’s demonstrate. In fact, on percentages, the greatest increases were in the early to mid 1970’s. After further significant increases from the late 1980’s into the 1990’s, it could be said that the price rises experienced during the last three years, once again a three-fold increase, have well and truly exceeded the expectations of many.

Table 1

An examination of table 1 shows how significantly these items have increased in value over the years.

From an overall perspective, the increases are expressed as an index in table 2 below. In order to make a wider comparison, the Kangaroo results as reported last month are also shown. For both groups, the early 1970’s and early 2000’s show the most significant increases. On the overall index, the Kangaroos moved ahead in the 1960’s and were almost caught by the KGV in 1980. Since then, the KGV issues have been playing ‘catch-up’. In the 1999/2001 figures, the KGV just exceeded the Kangaroos, although with no KGV catalogue in 1999, they had a two year advantage on that line of the table. Based on my estimated values in the current market, the Kangaroos are about 20% ahead of the KGV issues for the entire 1955 to 2004 period.

2004 750800 289.58 243.29 1206500 351 292.20

Across the board, the KGV items are now two hundred and forty-three times their 1955 value, compared to 292 for the Kangaroos. Over the entire period this is an average of 11.9% per annum, compared to 12.3% for the Kangaroos. As noted last month, there was little movement from 1955 to 1965, so from 1965 to 2004 the average increases to 15.1% per annum for the KGV issues, compared to 15.7% per annum for the Kangaroos.

Accordingly, any KGV item that has increased by a lower factor than 243 times the 1955 value has actually decreased in relative value, or as a portion of the entire group value. An example of this would be the 1d Engraved imperforate at right, for which the average price of the Plate 1 and Plate 2 to 4 varieties is now worth approximately 17 times the 1955 value. This item was very highly priced relative to many other items at £30 in 1955. Although still popular today, this has not been reflected in its current price. Compared to some varieties it is probably under priced on the market today. It is particularly difficult to find a very fine example, as most examples seen in the last twenty years have thins, creasing, toning or heavy hinging. It is interesting to note that in 1955, the average price for the imperforate between vertical pairs was only just over the price of the imperf at right singles at £35. Time has shown these pairs, whether from Plate 1 or Plates 2 to 4 to be considerably rarer, a fact that has only really been reflected in the price differential since some price corrections were made in the 1988 ACSC edition. Like the imperforate at right, the pairs are very difficult to find in very fine condition.

Small Multiple Watermark inverted 1/4d perf 14:
from £15 in 1955 to $15000+ in 2004

On the other hand, many of the rarer watermark inverted varieties are worth over five hundred times their 1955 value. The same is true of some of the rare imprints. These changes are largely a reflection of items being valued more consistently on rarity than has been the case in the past. Whilst some values, such as the 1d have always been more popular than others, it must be born in mind that all of the KGV issues are popular. Within this field, rarity to a large extent has overtaken popularity as a factor in pricing.

On this basis, it is always interesting to study how different items have moved relative to each other. It is clearly apparent that the rarer items, where only one or a few examples are recorded, are generally the ones that have increased by the largest margins, in recent times especially. This has highlighted the importance and effectiveness of the work shown in the 1994 edition of the KGV catalogue, where numbers recorded of the important items were detailed for the first time. Since then, the 2001 edition has built on that work, making the ACSC a truly remarkable and valuable necessity for those with even a passing interest in these issues. We are indeed fortunate to have the vast array of information contained within the ACSC pages at our finger tips! As fellow Stamp News columnist Glen Stephens has noted on a number of occasions, it is doubtful whether the specialised catalogues for any other country come even close to the ACSC with regard to the comprehensiveness of their listings.

Finally, it is also interesting to note some of the errors and corrections made in pricing over the years. In the 1980’s the 2d scarlet single watermark inverted, of which only one example without the ‘OS’ perfin is recorded was reduced to only $17 and then $20 in 1988. I was fortunate to handle this item a number of years ago, and since then it has not reappeared on the market. The 4d blue imprints were catalogued very highly for a number of years and then halved in price during the 1950’s. In 1955 the 1/4d single watermark deep turquoise shade was priced at a significant £20 compared to £10 for the similarly named although different 1/4d CofA watermark shade. In 1960 the roles were reversed with the former dropped to a meager £5 and the latter still at £10. By comparison, they have stayed relatively close to each other since then. One of my long-time favorites, the Single Watermark ½d green thin fraction at right was very under-rated by comparison to other items such as the 4d violet line through ‘FOUR PENCE’ for many years. It has partly caught up in the more recent editions, and I have no doubt will bridge the gap further in the next edition.

Although the intricacies of pricing these issues remain, with much new information at hand and a more sophisticated market, the quality of the ACSC improves with each edition published. Whilst the new Kangaroo edition is due out shortly, KGV enthusiasts will have to wait a little longer for the next official ACSC update in prices!
